Free waste drop-offs launched to deter Halloween bonfires in Meath

Meath residents are being urged to dispose of unwanted bulky household items responsibly this October, as part of a countywide initiative aimed at reducing illegal bonfires during the Halloween season.
Throughout the month, four Halloween Bulky Waste Drop-Off Events will take place across the county, offering people an environmentally friendly way to get rid of large waste items.
It is hoped the initiative will discourage the use of waste materials such as furniture and other bulky items in bonfires, which can cause serious harm to both people and the environment.
Environmental Awareness Officer Bernadine Carry highlighted the dangers posed by bonfires.
“Halloween bonfires cause serious damage through harmful, toxic smoke polluting the air, injuries from collapsed or exploding fires, costly property damage, and severe environmental harm to soil and green spaces.”
The burning of hazardous materials like plastics, tyres, and gas canisters creates dangerous fumes, poses fire risks to buildings, and leaves behind dangerous debris. Never, ever, give your waste material for use in a bonfire.”
Meath County Council said the events are open for domestic bulky waste only, such as couches, bed frames, chairs, tables, cots, prams, wardrobes, and patio furniture. Hazardous waste—including paint, oil, mattresses, and garden waste—will not be accepted.
