‘Final piece in the jigsaw’ – Footpath between Colpe and Donacarney proposed in Meath

Calls for the construction of a footpath linking Colpe and Donacarney have been made by a local councillor, urging Meath County Council to “make the project a priority”.
Fianna Fáil councillor Stephen McKee, who has tabled a motion at this week’s meeting of the Laytown-Bettystown Municipal District, said the footpath is urgently needed to provide a safe and viable alternative to car travel for local residents.
“I have tabled this motion because it is clear that a footpath to link Donacarney to Colpe is badly needed to meet the needs of local residents and provide a safe and viable alternative to the car,” he said.
He noted that funding was recently allocated for the provision of a new footpath between Gaelscoil An Bhradain Feasa and Drogheda Educate Together School to improve infrastructure in the area.
“We now need to see movement on the provision of a footpath from the top of the Mill Road down to Donacarney, which would provide a safe walking and cycling route from the schools on the Mill Road down to Donacarney,” Cllr McKee said.
“It would also be the final piece in the jigsaw to provide a safe walking route between Colpe, Donacarney, Bettystown, and Laytown.”
The East Meath councillor added that families and children should be able to safely walk from Donacarney to all our local schools.
“This would serve also in seeing a reduction in the amount of cars using the Colpe Road at peak times and would give travel options to parents who face increasing transport costs.”
The motion is set to be discussed at the March meeting of the Laytown-Bettystown Municipal District this week.
