Additional funding has been allocated to Meath County Council to upgrade rural roads and laneways, a Fine Gael senator has said.

The total 2025 allocation for Meath under the Local Improvement Scheme now stands at €834,787, with the latest additional funding amounting to €286,016.

Senator Linda Nelson Murray said this investment will improve access to rural homes, farms, and outdoor amenities across the county.

“It’s great to see a further €286,016 allocated to Meath County Council for rural road improvements. We all know a road or laneway across the county that is in real need of an upgrade,” she said.

The Local Improvement Scheme (LIS) supports the upgrade of non-public rural roads, particularly those providing essential access to homes, farms, and amenities such as lakes, rivers, graveyards, and beaches.

The Meath West senator said the funding will directly enhance connectivity for people living and working in rural Meath.

“Under this scheme, Meath County Council is responsible for identifying and prioritising roads for improvement works, in consultation with residents and landowners. The work must be completed by the end of the year,” Ms Nelson Murray said.

“Eligible roads include non-public roads providing access to parcels of land where two or more are owned or occupied by different people—one of which must be for agricultural purposes—as well as roads leading to important community amenities such as graveyards, beaches, piers, and mountains.”

“I look forward to seeing how this additional funding is used to improve our rural roads across Meath,” she added.
