‘Deep frustration’ grows as Mornington Beach facilities in Meath fall into ‘disrepair’

A local councillor has called on Meath County Council to take “immediate action” to address safety, accessibility, and environmental concerns at Mornington Beach.

Sinn Féin Councillor Maria White said she has written to the council requesting urgent measures to protect the popular coastal destination from coastal erosion and ongoing disrepair.

“The people of Meath are blessed with approximately 20 kilometres of coastline,” Cllr White said on social media.

“It is up to Meath County Council to ensure our beaches are protected.”

“The boardwalk has deteriorated to a dangerous state of disrepair. I understand the deep frustration felt by beach goers to see what was once a great facility, in terms of accessibility and inclusion, is now hazardous, yet no replacement has taken place.”

Mornington Beach is located on the Coastal Road between Bettystown and Laytown, and it is a popular destination for families and walkers.

According to the councillor, parking at Mornington has also become difficult due to “dune loss and soft ground”. As the area is a conservation site, hard-core surfacing cannot be added.

“I have asked the council to outline their plans for beach goers this summer,” Cllr White said.

She also urged the council to purchase 1.6 acres of land adjacent to Harry’s shop, which could be used for a car park, toilets, and a playground, providing much-needed infrastructure for visitors.

“Mornington has been left by the wayside in terms of investment. I have asked for increased investment into the area. The ‘lego style’ blocks placed at Mornington to prevent cars accessing the dunes are hideous, I have requested that these be replaced as soon as possible with natural boulders.”

“I will continue to pursue these matters with Meath County Council until Mornington is finally provided with the much-needed investment it deserves,” Cllr White added.
