Construction is set to begin on a new bridge and cycleway in Navan, marking a significant step forward in improving pedestrian and cycling access across the town.

The Blackwater River Town Bridge and Cycleway officially broke ground last Friday. Delivered by Meath County Council in partnership with Fitzwilliam Group, the project will link Navan Town Centre with Blackwater Park, providing safe and convenient routes for residents and visitors.

The bridge and cycleway are expected to open to the public in the second quarter of 2026. Fitzwilliam Group will oversee construction, which includes the new bridge, footpaths, cycle paths, and public lighting.

The development is located on a 0.77-hectare greenfield site in the townlands of Abbeyland and Abbeyland South.

Meanwhile the bridge will run north-south across the Blackwater River, connecting the open park on the north bank to the Balmoral estate on the south. The project aims to provide a traffic-free recreational route and encourage sustainable travel to and from Navan Town Centre.

Martin Murray, Director of Services for Transportation, Urban Regeneration, and Asset Management at Meath County Council, said the project will boost “connectivity and promote physical activity for the people of Navan for generations.”

William Smyth, Chairman of Fitzwilliam Group, added: “I am thrilled to see this project of public good underway, which has taken seven years of commitment from the various stakeholders involved. On completion it will become an asset for Navan for many years to come.”

The Blackwater River Town Bridge and Cycleway is set to become a key amenity for Navan, enhancing sustainable travel options and creating a safe, traffic-free environment for walking and cycling.
