Construction of long-awaited Meath village playground gets under way

By Sylvia Omorodion, Independent.ie

The long-awaited Longwood Playground project has officially begun, marking a major boost for children and families in the south Meath village.

Earlier this week, Meath County Council Chief Executive Kieran Kehoe and Padraig Davis of Davis Engineering signed contracts to begin construction, with work now underway on the site.

The playground, located on the Green in Longwood, is expected to be completed by the end of the year and will provide a “vibrant new recreational space” for the local community, the local authority said.

The development proposed at the start of the year will include a new, fully equipped playground with safe pedestrian access.

The project involves extending the existing footpath along the L80314 road (northern side of Longwood) and providing an additional footpath across the Green to connect with the R160 road.

The works will also include new road signage and markings to improve safety around the site.

Meanwhile, existing mature trees along the eastern boundary of the Green will be retained and protected during construction.

The play area itself will be enclosed with a 1.2-metre high safetop weldmesh fence, “galvanised and powder-coated green” to blend with the surrounding landscape.
