Call to record all Meath County Council meetings for transparency

All Meath County Council meetings should be recorded, a local councillor has said.
Sinn Féin councillor for Laytown-Bettystown, Maria White, said the move would help avoid “he said, she said” scenarios.
“In order to avoid useless ‘he said, she said’ scenarios, and for the purpose of transparency, accountability and openness, I firmly believe all Meath County Council full meetings and municipal district meetings should be recorded,” she said on social media.
The call comes after Meath County Council rejected what it described as “inaccurate claims” that the East Meath Civic Building and library are at direct risk of coastal erosion.
The local authority said the facility was not “identified as being at risk”, following a statement by Cllr White, who had said it had been “confirmed” that the building was at risk from erosion.
Speaking on The Agenda with Adrian Kennedy on LMFM this week, Cllr White said greater transparency was needed.
"Everything in the Dáil is recorded and since covid, councillors and members of the public can join meetings online via Zoom. There is a record function on Zoom. So it wouldn't be too difficult to organise,” she said.
"I really do think in 2026 that it's time that all public representatives and decisions made in the interest of the public be out there on record."
