Call grows to improve ‘dangerous’ junction in Meath as community demands action

By Sylvia Omorodion, Independent.ie

South Drogheda & East Meath Fianna Fáil Councillor, Stephen McKee, presented the petition at last week’s Laytown-Bettystown Municipal District meeting.

Speaking after the meeting, Cllr McKee said: “I was happy to present a petition of more than 300 names to Meath County Council to demand meaningful action on the Beamore Road, Drogheda.”

“The Petition represents a significant demonstration of the level of anger and frustration in the community over the lack of action on improving road safety along this road.”

“I have been raising road safety issues at Beamore Cross and Mounthanover Junction over a period of time now with Meath County Council and I am happy to lead this charge on behalf of local people.”

The councillor had a motion before the district’s last Council meeting seeking urgent road safety measures all along the Beamore Road.

He described the junction as having a long history of accidents and called for measures such as better signage, improved road markings, and traffic management changes.

He also raised the option of closing the upper link road at the junction (L-56131-0), which was previously proposed but not implemented after public objections in 2022.

“Something urgently needs to be done as there are simply too many accidents happening. The whole Beamore Road from Colpe to Platin needs to be a priority for road safety measures as it is very unsafe.”

Meanwhile Meath County Council confirmed to Cllr McKee recently that the L-16111/L-56131 junction is one of 26 locations identified under a national Network Safety Analysis for potential low-cost safety improvements.

“I will keep the pressure on,” he added.
