Call for traffic calming outside national school in Meath

Concerns over speeding in Kilbride Village in Meath have prompted a call for urgent traffic calming measures.
Fianna Fáil Councillor Conor Tormey submitted a motion asking Meath County Council to install safety measures along the L1007 Kilbride–Ratoath Road, particularly on the stretch from Cherry Tree Drive to Kilbride National School.
Speaking at the October meeting of Ashbourne Municipal District, Cllr Tormey said several residents had contacted him about ongoing speeding issues in the area, which they fear pose a danger to both schoolchildren and pedestrians.
In response, Meath County Council’s Transportation Section confirmed that it is currently drafting a Traffic Calming Policy for the entire county.
“The policy sets out detailed criteria for the assessment and delivery of Traffic Calming measures to reduce the adverse effects that speed, and volumes of traffic have on our roads,” the council said.
Once the new policy is adopted, all requests for traffic calming — including the one for Kilbride Village — will be assessed in line with the established criteria, and appropriate actions will be taken accordingly.
The council added that the new framework will allow for the development of a structured programme of traffic calming projects and enable it to seek annual funding for such works.
“Traffic calming aims to improve road safety and enhance the environment for all road users and allows for a programme of schemes to be developed and to seek annual funding,” they said.
