Call for traffic calming on Navan’s residential road to ‘offset speeding and dangerous driving’

A Meath councillor has called for urgent traffic calming measures on Donaghmore Lane in Navan amid concerns about speeding and dangerous driving in the area.

At the October meeting of Navan Municipal District, Fianna Fáil councillor and Mayor of Navan, Padraig Fitzsimons proposed that measures be introduced “to offset speeding and dangerous driving in this locality.”

The motion follows ongoing complaints from residents who say that traffic volumes and excessive speed have made the narrow rural route increasingly unsafe for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists.

In response, Meath County Council confirmed that its Transportation Section is currently drafting a countywide Traffic Calming Policy. The policy will establish detailed criteria for assessing and delivering measures designed to reduce the adverse effects of speed and high traffic volumes on local roads.

According to the council, traffic calming aims “to improve road safety and enhance the environment for all road users” and will allow for a structured programme of schemes to be developed and submitted for annual funding.

Once the new policy is adopted, all requests for traffic calming — including Donaghmore Lane — will be assessed under the same criteria, and “appropriate action” will be taken in line with the policy. The council said Cllr Fitzsimons’s request has been added to the list for consideration.
