A call has been made for a regeneration scheme to revive Academy Street in Navan amid concerns the area is slipping towards dereliction.

At the February meeting of Navan Municipal District, Fine Gael councillor John Duffy urged Meath County Council to consider introducing an urban renewal programme to support local business activity.

Cllr Duffy said the council needs to take more of “an interest” in the area as it is “bordering on dereliction”.

“It used to be a busy spot with about ten businesses operating there — now there are four,” he said.

He argued that targeted incentives and a structured plan could help restore vitality to the street, particularly in light of nearby developments including Baker Hall, Knockboyne House and two schools.

“If we don’t put some sort of scheme together, the net result will be further dereliction and less incentive for businesses to set up there,” he said.

“I think we need the council to take a serious look at it,” he added.

Other councillors voiced support for the proposal, with Fine Gael’s Yemi Adenuga suggesting a public consultation to identify what amenities and services are needed locally.

Aontú councillor Emer Tóibín said the street had significantly more retail activity in the past and warranted a comprehensive assessment.

“I grew up on Bridge Street and there were far more retail outlets on Academy Street when I was younger. Further development warrants a proper assessment,” she said.

Independent councillor Alan Lawes also backed the motion, saying existing businesses should be supported.

Meanwhile Mayor Padraig Fitzsimons pointed to previous regeneration initiatives in Navan, including schemes on Kennedy Road and Flower Hill, where grants and rate reductions encouraged development.

“With the development of Baker Hall, supply and demand may encourage businesses to set up there. This is something we should be looking at,” he added.

In response, Meath County Council said there are currently no specific plans for an urban renewal scheme for Academy Street. However, lands in the area are zoned for town centre commercial and mixed-use development under the County Development Plan.

Director of Services Martin Murray added that the council is progressing wider plans for the area, including improved pedestrian and cycling infrastructure.
