Call for playground in Meath village to promote health and combat ‘childhood obesity’

The need for a playground in one of Meath’s growing villages has been highlighted, with a local councillor saying it is needed to promote physical activity and combating “childhood obesity”.

At the December meeting of Trim Municipal District Council, Independent Councillor Noel French suggested that the council explore purchasing a portion of the old National School site, which is currently on the market, to transform it into a dedicated playground in Kildalkey.

While agreeing that the whole site is “too big,” he proposed that the council might acquire part of the site, such as the old tennis courts.

Social Democrat Councillor Ronan Moore supported the proposal and asked whether the council had engaged with the site owners since the previous request to have the property designated a derelict site.

Area Manager Des Foley confirmed prior contact with the owners and said the council would investigate the possibility of acquiring a portion of the site.

“A key objective of the County Development Plan is to promote the development of a community playground within the village of Kildalkey,” Cllr French said.

“Under the heading social infrastructure, the plan states it would be beneficial to improve the social amenities of the village, including the provision of a purposeful open space area or playground.”

"The plan identifies an opportunity to redevelop the existing school site, which could include elements of community or recreational uses.”

Census figures show that more than 300 children under 14 live in the Kildalkey electoral area, and in recent years, families have called for a safe and accessible play space in the community.

“Kildalkey is a vibrant and growing community, home to families, children, and residents of all ages. It is a close-knit community, but there is a clear need for a dedicated playground facility,” he said.

“A playground is far more than a collection of swings and slides—it is an essential resource for children’s physical, social, and cognitive development. Outdoor play encourages physical activity, which helps combat childhood obesity and supports healthy growth,” Cllr French added.

“Playgrounds provide opportunities for imaginative play, problem-solving, and the development of motor skills. In a safe, supervised environment, children can interact with peers, learn to share, and build friendships that contribute to their emotional wellbeing.”

The Trim councillor said a playground in Kildalkey would be a “vital investment” in the future of the village.

“It will enrich the lives of children, strengthen community ties, and enhance the overall quality of life for all residents.”
