Call for new bus stop and shelter at Newgate junction ‘noted’ by Meath County Council

A call has been made to improve public transport facilities for commuters on the busy R147 route between Navan and Kells in Meath.

A motion was brought before a recent Navan Municipal District meeting requesting that a bus stop and shelter be provided at the Newgate junction, a location frequently used by local passengers.

In his motion, Independent Councillor Francis Deane urged the council to write to Bus Éireann to ensure the installation of the stop and shelter at this point on the route.

Responding to the proposal, Meath County Council explained that responsibility for bus services, routes and bus stop infrastructure lies primarily with Bus Éireann and the National Transport Authority.

“Meath County Council provides assistance to the National Transport Authority in respect of the delivery of sustainable infrastructure, such as the project management of the construction works relating to bus stops and those necessary to facilitate the erection of the bus shelters by the Authority’s bus shelter installation contractor,” the local authority said.

The Council added that in February 2025 a list of priority stops and shelters to be advanced in Meath was circulated following discussions with the NTA, but the proposed Newgate junction stop was not included.

While the request has been noted, councillors were advised that such proposals should be raised directly with the transport authority.
