Call for greater oversight as Meath County Council confirms timeline for Kells Printing Works

A local councillor has expressed “disappointment” over Meath County Council’s decision not to establish an advisory board for the upcoming Kells Printing Works Studio.

At the July meeting of the Kells Municipal District, Councillor Sarah Reilly requested a comprehensive update on The Sawmills project including the expected opening date, proposed operating hours, the range of services to be offered, its management structure, long-term objectives, and whether an advisory board would be considered.

The Sawmills in Kells had been a popular community art space which is due to be transformed into a printing studio.

In response, Meath County Council confirmed that the studio’s commissioning and setup phase will begin this August, with a public opening planned for the fourth quarter of 2025.

The council outlined that the initial setup will involve the installation and testing of printing presses, furnishing of the studio and educational spaces, preparation of the compositing room, sourcing of equipment and materials, and implementation of health and safety measures.

The council also noted that it is finalising the appointment of a Creative Associate/Print Studio Technician, who will be tasked with developing a creative, collaborative, and inclusive arts programme for the facility.

Over the first year of operation, a phased rollout of services is planned. These will include creative workshops and camps for children, adult classes, guided tours and hands-on printing demonstrations, events tied to Kells' festivals, and educational visits for primary and secondary schools.

The council also aims to establish links with third-level institutions, develop printable merchandise, and collaborate with artists, printers, and typographers both nationally and internationally.

However, the council stated that there is no proposal to establish an advisory body. Management and operation of the Kells Printing Works will remain under the direct control of Meath County Council.

Speaking to the Irish Independent after the meeting, Cllr Reilly said: “I am disappointed with the Council’s position regarding the establishment of an advisory board for the Sawmills. This is a very specialised area, and I believe those managing the facility would benefit greatly from access to a pool of expertise and knowledge. I kindly ask the council to reconsider their stance on this matter.”

She also raised concerns about the lack of clarity surrounding the day-to-day operation of the facility.

“With the opening of the facility imminent, I was also hoping to receive more concrete information about the operating hours, days of operation, and the overall feel and look of the facility on a daily basis.”
