Blackwater Park in Meath welcomes county’s first Learn to Cycle Track

In a major step toward promoting safe cycling and sustainable transport, Meath’s first Learn to Cycle Track has officially opened at Blackwater Park in Navan.

The landmark facility was launched earlier this week by the Mayor of Navan, Cllr. Padraig Fitzsimons, alongside Meath County Council Chief Executive Kieran Kehoe.

Designed specifically for young children, the track is said to offer a realistic, traffic-free road layout complete with line markings, road signs, pedestrian crossings, and even a roundabout — all within a secure park setting.

The initiative provides children with a structured and safe environment to learn essential cycling skills. By fostering a culture of cycling, the council hopes to “reduce reliance on cars and contribute positively to the climate and environment for future generations.”

The mayor of Navan said: "The opening of the Learn to Cycle Track is a significant milestone for our community as it not only empowers our children with a crucial life skill but also promotes a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle.”

"We are excited to offer this facility, which we believe will enhance the safety and enjoyment of cycling for our young citizens."

As part of the overall upgrade to Blackwater Park, the site now also features a toddler ramp — offering even younger children the chance to practice their balance — and new seating areas for parents and instructors to observe and support cyclists.

Meanwhile Meath Sports Partnership has introduced a new Olympic-sized 3x3 basketball half-court at the park. This addition complements the existing sports facilities and is expected to further engage the local community in physical activities.

The Learn to Cycle Track is now open to the public, with local families encouraged to explore the space and make use of the community asset.
