‘Accessible’ footpath and bus shelters planned for East Meath village

A new footpath and two bus shelters are set to be delivered in Donacarney this summer as part of wider public transport improvements in the Meath area.
Fianna Fáil councillor Stephen McKee has confirmed that Meath County Council has approved the footpath, which will run between the former community centre and the bus stop on the Garra Road. The works will include the installation of the new shelters at the same location.
Cllr McKee said the development would address longstanding safety concerns for local residents.
“There is a clear and urgent need to ensure that local families can safely access local bus services,” he said.
“The provision of a safe, accessible footpath from the Community Centre down to the bus stops has been a long-standing priority of mine, so I am happy to see this project moving forward.”
The councillor added that he had been raising the issue with the local authority for several years, describing the approval as “good news for Donacarney residents”.
The works form part of a broader programme planned for the area in 2026, with the shelters to be installed on the Garra Road near Castle Glen under the council’s Schedule of Works.
“I have lobbied hard for these bus shelters on behalf of local residents and will continue working to include more locations as part of the rollout programme, so that in time we have shelters at every bus stop in East Meath,” Cllr McKee added.
“With the population growth in the area, residents need access to high-quality public transport services. We need to improve all transport and public services, including basic infrastructure such as bus shelters and footpaths.”
