Three extra Gardaí for Mayo following latest graduation

Three newly attested Gardaí have been deployed to Co Mayo following their graduation from the Garda College in Templemore on Friday. Two of the recruits have been assigned to Ballina, while one will be stationed in Castlebar, strengthening the visible Garda presence in the county.
They are among 154 Gardaí recruits who passed out today, in what represents the largest allocation of probationer Gardaí to regions outside Dublin in the past year. The government has said the move reflects ongoing investment in building stronger and safer communities.
In the north western region, 21 new Gardaí have been assigned from this intake. The southern region received the highest number at 66, followed by 45 in Dublin and 22 in the eastern region. The 154 new members of An Garda Síochána were recruited as part of the 2023 and 2024 drives.
Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary TD, has welcomed the three new Gardaí to County Mayo, saying that people across the country want to see a greater Garda presence in their area. He added that visible policing is one of the most effective ways to prevent crime and help communities feel safer.
“This latest allocation shows that investment in Garda recruitment is making a real difference on the ground. Local stations are being reinforced so they can continue to serve and protect communities effectively,” said the Ballina-based Minister.
“Strengthening An Garda Síochána is a key priority for Fianna Fáil in Government, backed by a record €2.48b in funding in Budget 2025, a 27pc increase since 2020.”
The deployment new Gardaí to the county comes at a time when crime figures present a mixed picture.
Overall, reported offences have declined compared to pre-pandemic levels. In 2024, there were 2,614 incidents recorded compared to 2,868 in 2019. However, 14 of Mayo’s 29 Garda stations reported increases in crime last year.
Ballina, where two of the new recruits will be stationed, recorded the highest increase in reported offences last year, rising from 472 in 2019 to 512 in 2024. The most commonly reported crimes were theft, public order offences, and criminal damage.
Meanwhile, Castlebar, the busiest Garda station in the county and where the third recruit will be based, saw a decrease in reported offences, dropping from 909 in 2019 to 737 in 2024. While theft and public order offences remained the most frequent crimes in the county town, Castlebar also recorded 82 assaults last year.
There are currently 369 recruits undergoing training in Templemore, and another intake of over 200 trainees is set to begin on Monday, August 25, 2025.
Of the 154 new Gardaí, 122 are male and 32 are female, representing a 79pc to 21pc gender split. 26 of the recruits were born outside the State, coming from countries including Australia, Belarus, Brazil, England, Germany, Kazakhstan, Nigeria, Northern Ireland, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Romania and the United States.
Minister Calleary highlighted the importance of Garda visibility: “More Gardaí on the beat is one of the most effective ways to deter crime and enhance public safety. This latest deployment is a clear signal that the government is delivering on its promise to support communities with the resources they need to feel secure.”
At today’s graduation ceremony in Templemore, Garda Commissioner Drew Harris congratulated the new recruits and highlighted the importance of community engagement in policing.
“These sometimes brief encounters stay with people. Whether it is the time you took to chat with an older person; or to sit and comfort someone at a time of sorrow, or in returning a stolen item to a victim of crime,” he said, “These are the moments people remember always.”
The deployment of new Gardaí in Mayo will help to contribute to ongoing efforts to maintain community safety, tackling crime such as thefts, assaults, and public order offences.
