Public consultation launched on new traffic-calming measures in Ballina

Mayo County Council has announced plans to introduce new traffic-calming measures at Carn National School in Moygownagh, Ballina, as part of the national Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programme.
The council are inviting submissions and observations from the public in relation to the proposed measures that will be implemented along the R315 Pontoon, Crossmolina and Ballycastle Road and the L5165 Kileemashaska Road.
A range of calming measures will be introduced, including pedestrian crossings, junction tightening, signage and road markings, along with improvements around the school entrance.
Carn National School is located off the R315 on a one-way slip road currently used for school drop-offs and collections.
The scheme will enhance safety for pupils and parents, provide safer pedestrian and cyclist crossings, and support the use of a nearby park and stride location.
The main objectives are to improve safety for pupils, cyclists, pedestrians and other vulnerable road users, encourage active travel to school, reduce traffic congestion at peak times, and enhance the school environment through landscaping and design improvements.
The Carn National School SRTS programme is one of 13 being developed across Mayo.
In June, €1.4 million was allocated to support these projects, with a further €190,000 granted to Mayo County Council for signage and road markings around rural schools located on high-speed roads.
The programme is funded by the Department of Transport through the National Transport Authority, supported by the Department of Education, and coordinated by An Taisce’s Green-Schools Programme.
The SRTS programme aims to make walking, cycling and scooting to school safer and more accessible, while reducing car dependency, improving road safety and promoting more active lifestyles.
Drawings and plans for the proposed works can be viewed at the Ballina Municipal District Civic Offices or via the online consult portal for Mayo County Council.
Submissions or observations can be made through the portal or in writing to Declan Turnbull, the Head of Ballina Municipal District.
The deadline for submissions is 4.30pm on December 9, and all suggestions received before that date will be considered by the council.
