Plans for a new medical diagnostic imaging centre given the green light in Mayo

By Charlotte Davis, Independent.ie

Plans for a new medical diagnostics imaging centre in Castlebar have been given the green light by Mayo County Council.

The facility, proposed by Alliance Medical Diagnostics Imaging Ltd (AMDI), will provide MRI, CT, X-Ray and Ultrasound services in a new unit that will replace a currently vacant commercial building in the Barcastle Retail Park along the R309.

Permission has been granted for all necessary renovation work to convert the former commercial unit into a medical facility, including internal refitting and exterior changes such as modifying the existing curtain wall glazing and relocating the main entrance to the east side of the building.

The plans also cover partial demolition of the vacant building to create higher ceilings, the installation of a new electrical substation, signage, and other necessary site works.

In its planning submission, AMDI noted that County Mayo is underserved in diagnostic imaging, with some Mayo residents having to travel to Galway and Sligo to access its services.

The new centre is designed to help address this gap by improving access to essential diagnostic care locally.

The location also ensures patients are close to emergency hospital services if required during imaging procedures.

The site in Castlebar was chosen for its proximity to Mayo University Hospital (MUH) and for being Mayo’s largest population town, allowing the service to reach the greatest number of residents.

AMDI met with MUH as part of its feasibility assessment for the development. It is hoped that the new facility will alleviate waiting times for patients who require diagnostic imaging services at the hospital.

Mayo County Council granted planning permission, subject to three conditions.

One, that the development would be carried out and operated in accordance with all plans submitted to Mayo County Council.

Two, that before any development begins, full drawings of the electrical substation will be submitted for written approval from the council.

Three, that all advertising signage will be submitted to, and agreed in writing with, the council before building works commence.
