Planning permission granted for new funeral home in Mayo

By Charlotte Davis, Irish Independent

Planning permission has been granted for the construction of a new funeral home on Hospital Road in Belmullet.

An application submitted by McDonnell Funeral Directors has been given the green light for the construction of a single-storey funeral home, along with a new entrance, internal access road, street lighting and parking facilities.

Plans submitted to Mayo County Council show the funeral home will include a main repose area, a secondary repose room, a coffin display room, an embalming room, a print room, and a hearse garage.

Administrative and visitor facilities include an office space, meeting room, kitchenette, male, female and disabled toilet facilities and a seating area.

The car park will accommodate 55 vehicles, including three disabled parking spaces.

Access to the site will be via the existing road serving Belmullet Community Hospital on the L22015, known locally as Hospital Road. The community hospital is located at the end of the cul-de-sac.

Two burial grounds are located close to the proposed funeral home, with Carne Cemetery in Carn Fowler to the north of the site and Glencastle New Graveyard in Bunnahowen, Carrowkeel to the south.

Permission was granted subject to 16 conditions relating to traffic management, pedestrian safety and noise control measures aimed at minimising disruption to neighbouring residents during the construction phase.

The funeral home will be built on a 0.4-hectare site zoned for “Community Services/Facilities” under the Mayo County Development Plan 2022–2028.

McDonnell Funeral Directors is a long-established family-run business run by brothers Seán and Padraig Conroy. The company is currently based on Lower Barrack Street in Belmullet.
