Planning for 87 new homes in Mayo gets the green light

By Charlotte Davis, Independent.ie

Planning has been granted for an 87 mix development of houses and apartments in Castlebar.

Mayo County Council has granted planning permission to Sayvale 25 Ltd for an amended residential development at Snugborough, Castlebar.

The development, which was originally permitted for 79 houses, has now been revised to include 87 residential units.

Under the amended plans, 38 of the previously permitted two-storey dwellings will be replaced with 42 two-storey homes, consisting of eight, three-bedroom semi-detached houses and 34 three-bedroom terraced houses. In addition, the revised scheme includes four two-bedroom own-door apartments and four one-bedroom own-door apartments.

The project will also involve connections to public services, the construction of a new link to a public wastewater pumping station, and all necessary ancillary site and landscaping works.

This marks an increase of eight units from the initial permission, bringing the overall total in the development to 87.

Planning permission has been granted subject to 21 conditions, which are aimed at ensuring the development is delivered in line with local planning and environmental requirements.

Castlebar was officially declared to be in the midst of a housing emergency earlier this year, as councillors warned that high rents and limited supply of housing have left many working families struggling to find suitable accommodation.

The development is one of the largest residential projects approved in recent years within close proximity to Castlebar town centre, and it is expected to contribute significantly to housing supply in the area.
