Planned industrial action at Mayo University Hospital stood down

By Charlotte Davis, Independent.ie

The planned industrial action by emergency department nurses at Mayo University Hospital (MUH), which was due to begin today, Monday, November 3, has been stood down.

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) has confirmed that, following negotiations with the Workplace Relations Commission, a proposal has been brought forward by the HSE to resolve unsafe staffing levels.

Nurses at MUH have repeatedly raised concerns about unsafe working conditions, with incomplete rosters, understaffed shifts, and persistently high trolley numbers that place staff under severe pressure and risk patient safety.

The INMO confirmed yesterday that the planned industrial action has been stood down to allow a ballot to take place on the proposal brought forward by the HSE with the help of the Workplace Relations Commission.

"Through the auspices of the Workplace Relations Commission, the HSE has brought proposals that seek to resolve the issues at the heart of this dispute, namely inadequate staffing and persistently incomplete rosters," said INMO Assistant Director of Industrial Relations for the West, Colm Porter.

"INMO members have stood down their planned action to allow a ballot on the proposals to take place," Mr. Porter added.
