Operation Tombola sees Gardaí seize substantial amount of illegal fireworks in Mayo

By Charlotte Davis, Independent.ie

Gardaí in Castlebar recently conducted a search of a property, resulting in the seizure of a substantial quantity of illegal fireworks.

The operation, known as Operation Tombola, is a nationwide initiative that forms part of the An Garda Síochána’s ongoing efforts to remove illegal fireworks from circulation and tackle public order and anti-social behaviour in the lead-up to Halloween.

In a Facebook post, Gardaí highlighted that every year around this time, they see significant injuries and damage to property due to the use of illegal fireworks. They added that the use of such items also causes distress to the local community.

The gardaí urged members of the public to refrain from purchasing illegal fireworks and reminded them that possession of such items is an offence. Gardaí also asked anyone with information relating to the sale or use of illegal fireworks to report it to their local station.

The post’s comment section reflected a mix of public opinion. Some users praised the Gardaí for taking illegal fireworks out of circulation. Others argued for the legalisation of fireworks.

In Ireland fireworks are classified from category one, very low hazard, up to category four, high hazard.

The general public are only able to purchase category one fireworks, and a license is needed to purchase any other category of fireworks.

Fines of up to €10,000 and or five years’ imprisonment, can be used for the possession, sale, or improper use of fireworks.
