New Superintendent appointed to Mayo Garda Station

By Charlotte Davis, Independent.ie

An Garda Síochána has confirmed the appointment of Ursula Hussey as Superintendent at Ballina Garda Station, where she will take responsibility for the Mayo North Community Engagement Functional Area.

The appointment took effect on Tuesday, January 6, following Superintendent Hussey’s promotion as part of a wider round of senior Garda appointments.

She is one of eight newly promoted Superintendents who are being deployed to counties across Ireland.

In her new role, Superintendent Hussey will oversee community engagement policing across North Mayo within the Mayo, Roscommon, and Longford Garda Division.

The new appointments form part of the ongoing implementation of the Garda Operating Model.

The Operating Model was rolled out to all 21 Garda Divisions in June 2025 and has established four functional areas within each division: community engagement, performance assurance, crime, and business service functions.

Gardaí say the restructuring reflects international best practice and is designed to respond to the realities of modern policing, including the changing nature of crime and population trends.

Under the Garda Operating Model, An Garda Síochána has been restructured at national, regional, and local levels, and a stronger emphasis has been placed on community policing to target local needs.

The model also enhances the investigation of crime by delivering more specialised Garda services at a local level, including units that investigate sexual crime, domestic violence, cybercrime, and economic crime.

Superintendent Hussey’s appointment is expected to strengthen Garda capacity and community-focused policing in North Mayo, at a time when the force continues to adapt its structures to meet the evolving needs of communities in the county.
