American fast-food giant McDonald’s has applied to Mayo County Council for planning permission to open its second restaurant in County Mayo.

The multinational corporation has applied for permission for a single-storey drive-thru restaurant on Knock Road, adjacent to Silverbridge Plaza and Shopping Centre in Claremorris.

Mayo’s first McDonald’s, found on the Lower Westport Road in Castlebar, opened in 1998. Across Ireland, there are currently 95 outlets operated by the franchise McDonald’s Restaurants of Ireland Ltd.

The proposed plans also include the sale of hot food for takeaway alongside the drive-thru service

The plans include ample car parking, including accessible spaces, a dedicated vehicle waiting area, electric vehicle charging points, and bicycle parking. A height restrictor will also be installed.

A new vehicle entrance will be created via the Silverbridge Plaza car park, with adjustments made to improve the circulation and traffic flow within the car park.

A new footpath and zebra crossing will be added to ensure safe access to the Silverbridge Shopping Centre, while the existing Knock Road footpath will be upgraded.

The planning application also seeks permission for customer order points with protective canopies, as well as totem and freestanding signage, banner frames, and digital menu boards.

The restaurant will feature landscaped outdoor areas with seating and parasols.

The new establishment will include plant equipment and solar panels on its roof, an ESB substation and kiosk on site, boundary treatments, and full lighting throughout the area.

The planning application was submitted to Mayo County Council on Friday, October 10 and is currently at the pre-validation stage.
