Information meeting planned for Ballina bypass project

A public information event on aspects of the planned Ballina bypass will be held next week.
The information event is scheduled for Wednesday August 27, and will focus on the proposed traffic calming measures for Fenian Row in Ballina as part of the bypass project.
The proposed layout for traffic calming measures on Fenian Row will be on display at St Mary’s Secondary School in Ballina from 4:30pm until 7:30pm. Staff from the Mayo National Roads Office will be present to answer any questions from the public.
Phase One of the Ballina Bypass Project is being developed by Mayo County Council in partnership with Transport Infrastructure Ireland. This scheme will provide an important new link southwest of Ballina town centre, connecting the N26 Foxford to Dublin Road with the N59 Crossmolina Road.
The proposed bypass is designed to ease traffic congestion in Ballina town centre, particularly at the Font Junction, and to improve journey times between the southern and western sides of the town.
The project is currently at phase three, Design and Environmental Evaluation. Roughan and O’Donovan-AECOM have been appointed by Mayo County Council to assist the project through phases two, three and four.
Phase three will develop the project design in greater detail, establishing land requirements, identifying and mitigating any project impacts, and progressing the project to the statutory planning stage.
The proposed development will include the following key elements:
2.24km national primary road (Type 2 Single Carriageway), with dedicated active travel provisions for walking and cycling.
Two new roundabouts, one on the N26 National Primary Road, and one on the N59 National Secondary Road.
A staggered at-grade junction connecting the new road with the L5113 The Commons Road.
Approximately 2 km of active travel facilities located away from the proposed development, including stopping vehicle access on a 525 meter section of Sweeney’s Road.
A railway underbridge to carry the new road over the existing Ballina to Manulla railway line.
One underbridge with restricted headroom of 4m over the L1122 Commons Road.
All those who are interested in the development are invited to attend the information evening.
