E-Scooter rider arrested in Mayo after driving over speed limit while under the influence

By Charlotte Davis, Irish Independent

Mayo Roads Policing Unit stopped an E-Scooter driver who was travelling at 36 km/h in the middle of the road in an “erratic manner”.

Following the stop, the rider was found to be intoxicated and was subsequently arrested and taken to a garda station.

The rider underwent an Evidential Breath Test, which showed they were nine times over the legal limit.

The E-Scooter itself was also found to be illegal in Ireland, as it had a top speed capacity of 50 km/h, with a motor power of 1200W and a 52V, 18Ah battery.

An Garda Siochanna said: “It exceeds legal limits for speed, power and weight and has no place on public roads”.

They warned that: “At these speeds, a crash can be fatal”.

They confirmed that the arrested rider will be prosecuted in court.

E-Scooters in Ireland must obey a speed limit of 20 km/h, and riders must not be under the influence of alcohol or drugs when using them.
