Derelict building to be demolished for new Western Care housing project
Planning permission has been granted by Mayo County Council to Western Care Association for the demolition of an existing derelict building and the construction of six new residential dwellings.
The approved application involves the demolition of a derelict building on Plunkett Road in Ballina, to make way for the construction of purpose-built living spaces for individuals supported by Western Care Association.
The plans include the construction of two detached three-bedroom, three-storey residential units, along with a two-storey building containing four independent one-bedroom living units with dedicated staff support areas.
The proposal also includes permission for on-site car parking, landscaping, and all associated infrastructure works, with new connections to public water and wastewater services.
The application was approved on 16 conditions, including maintaining high standards of design and visual appearance, protecting public health through proper water, drainage, and waste management, and ensuring traffic and pedestrian safety during and after construction.
The project will see the removal a derelict building in order to deliver six modern supported-living units, providing homes for the community while also contributing to the revitalisation of Ballina.
Western Care Association is a not-for-profit organisation that provides a range of supports to adults with intellectual disabilities or additional support needs across County Mayo.
The organisation offers various living options, including group homes where residents share accommodation with on-site staff support, supported living arrangements for those who require less assistance, and independent living supports for individuals living within the wider community.
Their services are designed to promote personal development, social engagement, and community participation.
