Ballyhaunis Primary Care Centre set to open early in 2026 after four years of delays

The long-awaited Ballyhaunis Primary Care Centre is set to open its doors to the public in early 2026, following years of setbacks and stalled construction.
The multi-million euro facility will serve the East Mayo community, offering services including: Public Health Nursing, Dental, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Home Support, Psychology, Dietetics, and Podiatry. There will also be a GP practice.
The update was confirmed today by Minister of State and Mayo TD Alan Dillon, who received an update from Mayo HSE West and North West on the development.
The local community has been eager to see the facility open, given the numerous delays there have been in the construction process.
The development of the care centre began in November 2019, but construction ceased in May 2021 after the project was deemed no longer economically viable for the developer.
The building remained idle and half complete for four years. The delays had been criticised by local councillors and TDs, with accusations of false deadlines and calls that it was unfair on the community in Ballyhaunis to have to wait even longer for the much needed care centre.
The HSE entered negotiations with the developer, and last year the project resumed. Construction closed again for an extended period in July and August of this year, but has since reopened and has now been confirmed to be complete in early next year.
“The opening of the centre will be a significant development in the delivery of community-based health services for the people of Ballyhaunis and the surrounding areas,” said Minister Dillon, “I will continue to push for this vital project so the centre can be opened to the East Mayo community as soon as possible.”
Adding that he was delighted with the news that progress was being made on the facility, Minister Dillon said: “The HSE have confirmed that once construction is finished later this year, the equipping and commissioning phase will commence with the centre anticipated to be ready for operation in early 2026.”
