Anger as ‘worst road in Mayo’ won’t see any works for another two years – ‘That is not good enough’

The R315 at Castlehill, a busy and narrow section of road, has been called the most dangerous in Mayo, with safety upgrades not scheduled to begin until 2027 amid growing concerns.

Cllr Michael Loftus has criticised the roads department in Mayo County Council for what he says is a lack of attention to North Mayo’s roads.

He said the timeline for the improvement works highlights the council’s neglect, calling the situation “despicable and deplorable.”

The R315 Castlehill section of the Crossmolina to Lahardane road is due to undergo improvement works to widen it and enhance safety measures along it.

The road is a key route for local traffic, including school buses, and is also used by commuters travelling from Crossmolina, Kilfian, and Ballycastle to Castlebar.

Cllr Loftus expressed his frustration during the latest Ballina Municipal District council meeting after receiving an update on the planned improvement works.

"That is not good enough. They just don't seem to be interested or care about what's happening," he said, adding, "It is the worst road in Mayo, I have no doubt about it. I want to see something happen sooner rather than later."

Cllr Loftus said the council's approach shows a disregard for North Mayo, adding "and that's where I have a serious issue."

He highlighted the dangers on the busy, narrow stretch of road and said that a number of cars that get damaged while driving on it, and explained that when two lorries or cars meet on that section, it can be a frightening experience, with drivers at risk of losing a mirror or even a tyre.

In response, Ballina Municipal District’s Head Engineer, Orla Burke, acknowledged Cllr Loftus’ frustrations but explained that the improvements must follow a design process, which dictates the current timeline.

Ms Burke also noted that Conrad Harley, the council's assistant head of roads, was planning a site visit to the section of road.

Cllr Loftus dismissed the answer as flippant, reiterating that it is the most dangerous section of road in the county.

He said he felt the issue was not being taken as seriously as it should be, and argued that other areas of Mayo receive faster action when they raise concerns about dangerous roads.

"We have been asking for help for a long time, so I just don't accept that answer from head office," he said.
