37 new social housing homes announced for Castlebar

37 more social housing units will be delivered in Castlebar as part of the ongoing Lios na Circe development.
Phase three of the project has gone to tender. Lios na Circe is expected to deliver a total of 118 homes when completed.
Phase one of the project comprised 37 social housing units as well as 22 affordable homes, this was completed in 2009.
The second phase of the project was opened in July 2024 and consisted of 22 housing units.
Phase Three of the Lios na Circe development will help to deliver a wide range of housing types, including family homes, accessible units, and purpose-built accommodation for individuals with additional needs.
Three side-access, three-bedroom houses
Four, two-bedroom universal access bungalows
One, four-bedroom special needs unit.
The project is led by Mayo County Council in line with the Mayo County Development Plan. It is part of the Government’s Housing for All plan.
Lios na Circe is located on the south-eastern outskirts of Castlebar, south of the town’s railway station. It is a primarily residential area, with Hawthorn Village and Lake Shore Drive in close proximity.
Designed with accessibility and inclusivity in mind, the new homes will be arranged around a central green in an enclosed loop layout to promote a sense of community and improve safety.
The development includes a mix of house types, from family homes to universal access bungalows and apartments. Through this, it meets the needs of a wide range of residents, including older people, families, and those with additional needs.
Each house will have a private garden to the rear of the home and a car parking space at the front.
Public open spaces are clearly defined and open to all, while Lios na Circe’s close proximity to Castlebar town centre offers easy access to essential services, recreational amenities and support for people of all ages.
Minister of State and Mayo TD Alan Dillon called the development a “game-changer” for Castlebar.
“It’s about more than housing – it’s about quality of life,” he said, “Getting this third phase to tender is a big step forward. This isn’t just about building houses, it’s about building a strong community in Castlebar. Families, older people, and those with special needs will all benefit from safe, modern homes.”
Minister Dillon added: “I’m proud to support Mayo County Council as they deliver this ambitious project. Lios na Circe is a great example of what can be achieved when we plan well and work together. This is a good day for Castlebar and Mayo.”
