Worried Drogheda residents ‘can’t get out of driveway’ due to speeding traffic
The Drogheda Independent”Some days we can’t even get out of our own driveway,” say worried Pearse Park residents who called for traffic calming measures along the busy Drogheda street.
Jim Carolan, who lives with his wife Dolores at Pearse Park, told of the increasing dangers as they approached the bottom of their drive.
“It is really dangerous, the cars are speeding around the corner and it is very difficult to get out at times,” said Jim.
He said that traffic in the area had “become a lot worse” after a new block of apartments were built in the area.
“This is an older part of Drogheda, and I don’t think the junctions are designed for the speed some cars travel at. We have been living here for forty years and I have never seen it as bad.”
He said there had been a number of collisions, including damage to a wall, and people living in the area were afraid of worse to come.
“Ramps would encourage drivers to slow down as they approach the junction. Our is the first house so they go past at speed. It can be really frightening.”
Jim added that neighbours were planning to unite in their calls, with a petition calling on the council to take action.
The Pearse Park and Crushrod Avenue junction was highlighted at last month’s meeting of Drogheda Borough District, where Cllr. Pio Smith raised resident’s concerns, asking the council to look at the speeding issues at the junction.
Louth County Council had committed to sending an engineer out to assess the area .
