‘Where the streets have no.. owner’ Louth road not in public ownership, meeting hears

By Olivia Ryan, Irish Independent

It was less about U2’s “Where the streets have no name” and more about the street with no outright owner when councillors in Ardee highlighted ongoing concerns about a dangerous route in the town centre.

Speaking at the June meeting of Ardee Municipal District, Enda Murphy, Senior Executive Engineer with Louth County Council, acknowledged frequent calls by councillors for weight restrictions to be introduced on Sean O’Carroll Street.

But he confirmed the local authority “don’t actually own” parts of the street, and that it would have to be brought under the council’s ownership “before we can even look at putting a weight restriction on it.”

Cllr. Rachel said she appreciated a process would have to begin to bring the street into the full ownership of Louth County Council before any steps could be taken to restrict large vehicles or improve safety on the road. She asked if there was a timeline for how long this process would take.

Cllr. Dolores Minogue said progress on improving Sean O’Carroll Street was welcome, adding “anything we can do to help.”

Councillors have previously raised serious concerns about safety along the street, which is frequently used by HGVs and other large vehicles.

Cars parked on both sides of the street have also been blocking access for local residents, according to councillors.

The meeting was told that the council would report back to Ardee councillors on the timeline for taking Sean O’Carroll Street into full public ownership.
