’She was at the top of her game’: Tributes from Louth councillor to Meath woman who died in Australia
The Drogheda IndependentThe “horrific” loss of a young Meath woman who died unexpectedly in Australia before Christmas led to an emotional tribute at the Ardee Municipal District meeting this week.
Cathaoirleach Cllr. Dolores Minogue expressed her sympathy to the family and loved ones of Sarah Halpenny (29), who had been living and working as a teacher in Melbourne at the time of her death.
News of her passing in December sent shockwaves through her hometown in Lobinstown, Co. Meath, where she was well-known for her dedication to gaelic football and was an active member of her local club Dee Rangers for many years.
Over €182,000 was donated to a Gofundme fundraiser to help with the costs of bringing the young woman on her final journey home to Ireland, as well as contributing to causes and charities that were close to Sarah’s heart.
Cathaoirleach, Cllr. Minogue said the Halpenny family had many links in Ardee and Sarah’s partner Ciaran is also originally from the town.
“It is just so sad, it’s horrific. There are no words for it.”
Cllr. Minogue said her own daughter had played gaelic football with Sarah in St. Kevin’s GAA Club in Melbourne, and described her as “at the top of her game.”
“She won everything out there in Melbourne, and even here at home with Dee Rangers. My deepest sympathy go to her family and friends, and to the wider community in Lobinstown.”
