A busy junction in the centre of Drogheda, where a fatal accident had occurred in 2023, is set to undergo road safety improvements as part of the new Westgate Vision regeneration scheme.

The junction, at West Street, was highlighted by Mayor Michelle Hall at the September meeting of Drogheda Borough District.

She highlighted the fatality which had occurred as a result of a serious accident, and pointed out that the council had given a commitment to review the junction. She asked if any progress had been made.

A spokesperson for Louth County Council told the Drogheda Independent:

“The Westgate Vision regeneration scheme includes a series of road safety improvement works for the Westgate Vision Area, which includes West Street junction. Proposed road safety improvement includes narrowing of vehicular traffic lanes, provision of cycle lanes, increased footpath and pedestrian areas, improved pedestrian crossing points, parking bays, loading bays, accessible parking bays, bus stops, and new public lighting.

As part of the planning application process for the Westgate scheme, Louth County Council completed traffic and transport studies and a road safety audit. Planning consent for the Westgate Vision scheme was approved by An Coimisiún Pleanála in February 2025 and we are currently developing a plan for phased delivery of the scheme.”
