A warning has been issued by Louth County Council urging members of the public “to be vigilant of unauthorised individuals falsely claiming to be contractors working on behalf of the council.”

The local authority has confirmed recent reports “of workmen calling to homes in mid-Louth stating they have leftover tarmac from resurfacing jobs allegedly carried out by the council.”

In a statement the council outlined how “these individuals may offer to carry out private work at a reduced cost.”

The local authority advised that it does not carry out private works for members of the public, and urged people to be aware that “any such offers are not affiliated with or endorsed by Louth County Council. These individuals are not legitimate Louth County Council contractors.”

“We urge the public to remain vigilant. If you are approached by anyone claiming to represent the council in this manner: Do not engage or accept any offers, and report the incident immediately to An Garda Síochána.”

It was also advised to take note of vehicle registration numbers or other identifying details.

The council also advised local people to share the warnings with neighbours, especially those who may be more vulnerable to such scams.

For further information or to report suspicious activity, contact your local Garda station or Louth County Council directly on 042 9335457.
