Almost €600,000 has been invested in the proposed Dundalk – Carlingford Greenway during 2025, Louth County Council has confirmed.

The project – which led to protests at County Hall in Dundalk last year – is now entering Phase 3 with the announcement of a preferred route for the greenway expected later in the summer.

At the recent monthly meeting of Louth County Council, Cllr. Antoin Watters queried how funds allocated earlier in the year were being spent, asking if the costs of environmental studies were being covered with these funds.

The local authority confirmed a 2025 allocation of €550,000 through the Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) for Greenway and Active Travel, for a project consultant and surveys to be carried out. An overall figure of €594,000 has been spent this year.

The allocation was part of €67 million to support the delivery of Greenway projects throughout the country in 2025.

The Dundalk Bay to Carlingford Greenway is one of approximately 60 Greenway schemes that are moving through the planning and design stages

Dundalk Councillors had previously heard that the preferred route of the greenway would be announced by August or September.

Louth County Council has committed to making contact with affected landowners first, before engaging with councillors and going out to public consultation.
