Ireland has an ageing population, and “future-proofing” our homes is key to preparing for that societal shift, Drogheda councillors heard at the monthly Borough District meeting.

Mayor Michelle Hall highlighted a recent visit by members to the Greenhill’s Grange development on Newtown Link Road in Drogheda.

The €18.7 million housing scheme will deliver 45 high-quality two-bed age-friendly bungalows and a five-bed assisted living bungalow, which will be allocated to people aged 55 years and over.

During a progress visit to the site, where work is well underway, councillors heard that the scheme will enable older people to live independently, safely, and actively within their community. It features housing and public open spaces that are inclusive, accessible, and designed to meet the needs of an ageing population.

Speaking at the monthly Borough District meeting, Mayor Hall praised the work has already been carried out at the development.

She said the bungalows were “amazing spaces” which are future proofed for an increase in the ageing population.

“It is great to see that we are way ahead of ourselves here, and we are hopefully addressing that need in the future. It is wonderful to see that people can, if they want, ‘rightsize’ their houses, which is the new term for moving from a bigger house down to a smaller house.”

Construction began on site in February 2025 by contractors, Cunningham Contracts Ltd. The development is expected to be completed by the middle of 2026.
