No plans for access point on Omeath–Newry Greenway
The Drogheda IndependentCalls for access to toilet and changing facilities along the Omeath - Newry greenway, which is nearing completion, emerged at the June meeting of Louth County Council.
Cllr. Fiona Mhic Conchoille highlighted the popularity of the greenway, but noted that the continuous stretch from Newry to Omeath, without any access on or off might need to be reviewed.
The enclosed scenic walking and cycling route is 11.5 kilometres from Newry to Omeath.
Cllr. Mhic Conchoille asked if Louth County Council, and the Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), might revisit or review further access to the greenway at the Cornamucklagh junction.
"I know it is is dependent on traffic calming measures, but locally the demand is there to access the greenway. “
She added that it was “a very long stretch of continuous greenway, without any toilet facilities whatsoever.”
Cllr. Mhic Conchoille pointed to plans to refurbish Cornamucklagh House, which included new accessible holiday lodges, saying that visitors to the venue would have to walk along the main Omeath road to gain access to the greenway.
She said this point along the greenway would be “ideal for a changing place unit” and toilet facilities.
Access to at this junction would “open up” further access to trails in Louth, Armagh and Down, along the Flagstaff view.
Currently, she said, motorists are stopping at this point and when they realise they can’t get access to the greenway at that junction they are going into Omeath, where parking is becoming increasingly challenging.
The meeting heard that the greenway has been secured “as is” and there are no plans, at the moment, for additional access points to the greenway.
Director of Services, David Jones, added that the stretch of greenway to the border is expected to the completed in the coming weeks, with an event to mark the launch due to be held in September.
