A Louth‑based STEM education company that has helped thousands of young people learn to code has been named ‘Cathaoirleach’s Business of the Month.’

Cllr. Sean Kelly, Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, announced The Code Lab as the latest recipient of the monthly award, which is supported by the Louth Local Enterprise Office.

Founded by STEM educator and IT professional Joan McCann, The Code Lab teaches children and teenagers to create with technology through coding courses, robotics and electronics workshops, camps, and an innovative online learning platform for schools. The business operates from Castlebellingham and has grown steadily in recent years, working with primary schools, community groups and youth organisations to boost digital literacy, creativity and confidence among young learners.

Joan told how she first began running coding workshops herself after realising there were no local classes available for her own children. From there, The Code Lab developed into a structured programme supporting schools and families, with new initiatives now being introduced for secondary students.

“The support I’ve received from the Local Enterprise Office at every stage of my business growth, as well as from local partners, collaborators and schools, has been invaluable,” she said.

She extended special thanks to Castletown Girls School, which partnered with her to develop the Online Schools Coding Programme.

“They helped shape it from the very beginning, supporting students’ first steps in coding and STEM,” she said. “This award reinforces my mission to make STEM education accessible, engaging and fun, and I’m excited to keep creating opportunities for young people across Louth and beyond to explore technology with confidence.”

Announcing the award, Cathaoirleach Kelly praised the company for its vision and impact.

“Founded in Castlebellingham, The Code Lab is an innovative local enterprise that is empowering the next generation with the skills and confidence they need to thrive,” he said. “Joan recognised a gap in the market and has used her experience, passion and creativity to create an exciting and forward‑thinking business. The Code Lab is helping to build digital confidence and future‑ready skills at a time when coding and digital education are more important than ever.”

The Code Lab now joins a growing list of local enterprises recognised under the Cathaoirleach’s Business of the Month scheme, which highlights businesses that are driving innovation and community development across the county.
