Ardee councillors backed a new approach to housing for older people in Louth as ‘rightsizing’ schemes are rolled out across the county.

Cathaoirleach at Ardee Municipal District, Cllr, Dolores Minogue, told the January meeting that she was aware of schemes in other parts of the country where people over 55 had moved from larger family homes into a gated community.

She asked if the council could look at developing a similar scheme.

Cllr. Jim Tenanty said he understood this new community for older people was in County Laois. He added that Ardee had been at the forefront of these schemes with the launch of Moorehall village, which was one of the first in the country.

The new development in Laois was inspired by a similar approach in Australia and New Zealand, said Cllr. Tenanty.

Christine Mullen, Administrative Officer (Housing) at Louth County Council said options for “rightsizing” were included in the new Housing Allocation Scheme.

She explained that private home owners can sell up and move to properties that are specifically designated for older people in new developments that are aimed at over 55s.

Council tenants who are looking to downsize can also avail of a grant up to €1000 if they avail of this scheme.

The government are set to publish a national rightsizing scheme, she added.

Cllr. John Sheridan said he had a motion passed in 2023 in relation to rightsizing as it had been mentioned in the County Development Plan.

"I think it is important that there is a plan for the future for the over 55s, while they are still able to plan for the future,” he added.

Cathaoirleach, Cllr. Minogue, welcomed the option being available to people who wanted to make the move to a smaller property as they grow older.

Cllr. Pearse McGeough asked if the rightsizing option is also available to private homeowners.

Ms. Mullen said the options are available to both private homeowners and council tenants.
