Louth retains Blue Flag status for three beaches as lifeguard season begins

Three of Louth’s most popular beaches have retained their prestigious Blue Flag status for 2026, while Seapoint in Termonfeckin has once again been recognised with a Green Coast Award.
Clogherhead, Port and Templetown beaches have all one again secured the internationally recognised Blue Flag designation, which marks high standards in water quality, environmental management, safety and public education.
Seapoint, meanwhile, continues to be acknowledged under the Green Coast programme, which highlights beaches of excellent water quality and outstanding natural beauty.
Speaking at a flag-raising ceremony at Port Beach, Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, Cllr Seán Kelly, said the awards recognise both the value of the coastline to local communities and the efforts made to protect it.
“Our coastline and beaches are a key part of Louth’s identity and something we are all very proud of,” he said. “Our Blue Flag beaches are important local amenities that people enjoy every day.”
“These awards reflect the work of our communities, volunteers and council staff in protecting these special places for everyone to enjoy,” he added.
Chief Executive David Conway said the council was “very proud” to retain the designations, describing them as a testament to sustained partnership at local level.
“In particular, I would like to acknowledge the important role of volunteers, along with the council team, whose dedication helps to maintain the high standards that make our beaches such valued amenities,” he said.
“We remain committed to working in partnership to protect and enhance our coastline for the benefit of everyone.”
Nationally, a total of 95 Blue Flag awards and 73 Green Coast Awards have been granted for the 2026 bathing season.
The announcement also coincides with the return of Louth County Council’s beach lifeguard service, which resumes this weekend, Saturday, June 6.
Lifeguards will be on duty at Port, Templetown and Clogherhead beaches on weekends throughout June, daily during July and August, and again on weekends in September up to Sunday, September 15. Service hours will run from 11am to 6pm.
Members of the public are being reminded to swim between red and yellow flags, follow lifeguard advice, and ensure that emergency access routes remain clear. Basic water safety precautions should also be observed.
The council said the measures are aimed at ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all beach users over the summer months.
