Louth motorists face disruption as N2 set for weeks of closures

Louth motorists are being warned to expect disruption over the coming months as Louth County Council confirms the planned closure of sections of the N2 between Ardee and Cookstown to facilitate road improvement works.
The council has issued notice of the scheduled works, which will take place “for short durations of not more than seven days from March 9th to June 19th.”
The works will involve a series of temporary closures affecting key stretches of the national route, along with associated diversion routes.
Under the plans, the N2 will be closed south of the roundabout, with traffic diverted along the N52 and onto the N33. The R171 at Tallanstown will also be closed for five nights between 18 May and 5 June 2026, with motorists rerouted via the R166 and then onto the N52.
A further closure is proposed at the Carrickmacross roundabout, where resurfacing works on the N2 will require night‑time closures for another five-night period within the same date window. All diversion routes will be signposted, the council said.
In addition to the closures, Louth County Council has confirmed it is implementing a Road Works Speed Limit Order under Section 10(1) of the Road Traffic Act 2004. A temporary speed limit of 50 km/h will apply on the affected stretch of the N2 from 9 March to 19 June 2026 in the interest of road safety.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time for journeys and follow all temporary traffic management measures in place during the works.
