A 31-year-old man has had two public order charges struck out after donating to the court fund.

John Joe McDonagh, Woodland Park, Inner Relief Road, Dundalk, was told by the judge to “grow up” after evidence was given that he had his top off when Gardaí responded to a row earlier this year.

Judge Nicola Andrews remarked that anyone would be mortified “if fighting on the street like a child”.

The district court heard that at 3am on April 27 last a report was received of a disturbance in Woodland Park.

Gardaí at the scene saw Mr McDonagh with his top off and shouting in an abusive manner. His speech was slurred and he was unsteady on his feet. He was arrested.

There were eight previous convictions.

Judge Andrews said that the defendant could give €300 to the court fund or be assessed for 120 hours community service.

"Oh, look. You’ve the wallet out already,” she added as Mr McDonagh walked up and handed over the money.

"It was an expensive episode for you. Grow up,” the judge continued.

Charges of being intoxicated in public and using or engaging in threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour or words were struck out.
