Louth housing adaptation funding boost to ‘support independent living’ for older people

A significant increase in housing adaptation grant funding will help older people and those with disabilities in Louth to continue living independently in their own homes, according to local councillor.

The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage has allocated €3,518,600 to Louth for 2026, with an additional €620,931 contribution from Louth County Council. In total, €4,139,540 will be available for applicants seeking home adaptation supports across the county.

The scheme helps fund alterations within the home such as bathroom alterations, ramps, or accessibility improvements, which can transform daily life for tenants.

Fine Gael councillor Robert Nash welcomed the announcement, saying the grants “have a meaningful impact on the home life of many older people and those with disabilities.”

The councillor said this year’s combined funding for Louth will play a key role in helping residents remain in their homes and communities for as long as possible.

“It is fantastic to see a 30% funding increase overall in this grant for 2026, which will deliver 17,000 grant claims for older and disabled people, many of them living in Louth,” he said.

He described the scheme as crucial in enabling the local authority to help residents adapt their homes to suit their needs.

“I have met many recipients here in Louth and have seen the positive difference that adaptation works have made to their lives at home,” he said. “The local economy also benefits through the provision of employment for local tradespeople.”

Cllr Nash also praised Louth County Council’s role in operating the grants system, from assessing applications to arranging home inspections and approving works.

“I would like to commend Louth County Council which does great work in administering the grants,” he added.

“I am firmly committed to supporting individuals to remain at home and within their own communities, and these increased grants will enable more people to do that.”
