Louth County Council's 2025 roadworks programme has kicked off with a series of routes already completed, councillors heard at the July meeting of Drogheda Borough District.

Cllr. Anne Marie Forde highlighted a number of roads in Tinure where problems have been arising, including the Cull Road, where she said “dangerous” tree overgrowth was making it difficult for two cars to pass, and asked that local landowners are contacted to address this.

Concerns have also emerged about the speed limit on the Cockle Road, said Cllr. Forde, with local residents “in fear of their lives driving their cars out of their driveway because of the speed of traffic passing.” She queried if this road was going to be resurfaced.

Mayor, Cllr. Michelle Hall, called for the solar signage on the Baltray Road to be moved, as it is currently covered by trees, and is not getting sufficient sunlight to charge.

She highlighted the Thunder Hill area of Termonfeckin, where she said a slow sign needs to be added as it is a “dangerous, bendy hill.”

The Strand Road, and the road into Baltray, where there are two golf clubs, should also be looked at in terms of speed, said Cllr. Hall. “People might be rushing in to get teeing off, and there is no slow signage at all.”

Cllr. Pio Smith asked for an update on the roadworks programme.

Senior Engineer at Louth County Council, Mark Johnston, told the meeting that the council’s roadwork’s roadworks programme had already begun in Ardee and would be moving around the county in the coming months.

He said that the old N52 north of Ardee had been completed in the last week, adding that they were focusing on any roads on the programme which were close to schools, in order to have these completed during the school summer holidays.

“The roadworks programme will continue week after week between now and October, until we get through it all,” said Mr. Johnston.
