Drogheda’s forgotten son – The ESB pioneer who ‘helped shape modern Ireland’

Plans for the ESB’s centenary year in 2027 to be marked in Drogheda are on the cards after it emerged one of the founders of the state’s electricity board hailed from the Louth town.
Cllr. Declan Power tabled a motion at the April meeting of Drogheda Borough District calling on Louth County Council to acknowledge the “pivotal role played by Drogheda native and engineer Thomas McLoughlin” in the foundation of the ESB and “in the transformation of Ireland through electrification and modernisation.”
He asked that the council engage with the ESB, who have already indicated they will work with the local authority “to develop a programme of commemorative, educational and civic initiatives in Drogheda and across the county to appropriately honour Thomas McLoughlin’s legacy and ensure his contribution is recognised at both local and national level.”
Speaking at the meeting, Cllr. Power said “the heart of the story is that one of the key architects of modern Ireland was from Drogheda.”
He added that the ESB “did far more than just put in electricity, it transformed daily life in Ireland” and “help change the course of Ireland’s development” at a critical point of the state’s early history.
Cllr. Power said Thomas McLoughlin, who was born and raised in Drogheda “stands alongside another son of Drogheda, T.K Whitaker.”
Yet, while Whitaker was recognised for his achievement’s, McLoughlin remains less well known.
In a written response Joanna Kelly, Director of Service, said Louth County Council recognises the importance of the ESB centenary next year.
"Accordingly Louth County Council will engage with the ESB to explore the feasibility of developing an appropriate programme of initiatives in Drogheda and across County Louth.”
Cllr. Power welcomed the response of the council saying: “Drogheda and County Louth should rightfully take its place in this great story,” and celebrate Thomas McLoughlin as “one of the leading figures who helped shape modern Ireland.”
