Carlingford Greenway closing for five weeks as work ramps up on Narrow Water Bridge

By Olivia Ryan, Irish Independent

A section of the Carlingford Lough Greenway is set to close temporarily to make way for works on the Narrow Water Bridge.

Louth County Council confirmed the upcoming closure, which will begin on Tuesday May 26 from 650 metres northwest of the junction with the L7051 road to a point 2.4 kilometres southeast of Victoria Lock.

The closure, which is to facilitate works at Narrow Water Bridge, will maintain traffic via Fathom Line and R179 Newry Road and L7051.

To area will be closed to pedestrian and cyclist traffic at all times from May 26 for five weeks. Local access and emergency access will be maintained.

The local authority have confirmed that diversions will be in place for the duration of the closure. Northbound traffic will be diverted via L7051, along R179 and Fathom Line to Victoria Lock.

Southbound traffic will divert via the Fathom Line and R179, onto L7051 to the access to the Greenway.

Anyone wishing to object to the closure should lodge a submission via Louth County Council’s Online Consultation Portal https://consult.louthcoco.ie/en/browse not later than 12 noon on Friday May 8, 2026.

Louth County Council recently announced the arrival of the fixed span bridge structure has been delayed until September. The local authority say the “moving timeframe” will not substantially affect the overall completion date for the project.

The flagship cross‑border infrastructure, which will link County Louth with County Down for the first time, is expected to boost tourism, improve active travel links and strengthen economic ties between north and south.
