Parking needed to cater for older people at Laois library

A busy Laois library is in need of a designated parking space for older people, a local councillor has petitioned.

Cllr Vivienne Phelan has requested Laois County Council to install an Age Friendly parking space outside Stradbally Library.

A number of library users and their families have raised the lack of designated parking spaces at the library with Cllr Phelan.

“I’ve been asked several times by different people and family members of older people who potentially would be going to the library for either one of the many evening social events held there regularly or visiting the Arthouse,” Cllr Phelan said at the recent meeting of the Graiguecullen/Portarlington MD.

She pointed out that Court Square can often be congested which forces people to park further away from the library and the neighbouring Arthouse. This, of course, can be too much for some older people.

“I think there’s been great investment in our library services. We have a great team in the county’s library services so it would be nice if everybody could fully make use of that as easily as possible,” the Fine Gael councillor said.

Cllr Paschal McEvoy supported the motion, noting that the library is generally used by older people.

Senior Executive Engineer with Laois County Council, Tom Drennan, agreed that the council would carry out an assessment of the location and determine the merits of the request.
