‘Most dangerous corner in Ireland’ - Demands for traffic lights at Laois corner

A Laois village is home to the “most dangerous corner in Ireland,” according to a concerned local councillor.
Laois County Council has been called to do something about the major safety concerns at Shelly’s Corner in Rosenallis.
Fears regarding the safety of the corner have been raised numerous times by local councillors in recent years, and now Cllr Seamus McDonald has brought the issue to the attention of Laois County Council again.
Cllr McDonald has previously raised the concerns with Shelly’s Corner with Laois County Council. The Fianna Fáil councillor noted that the last time he brought forth the motion, it was agreed that something would be done to address the concerns.
However, nothing has been done to solve the issues with the particularly tight corner which sees a lot of traffic from heavy goods vehicles.
With a high volume of trucks driving through the corner, the President of the Irish Road Haulage Association and local Rosenallis man, Ger Hyland, called on Cllr McDonald to highlight the issues with Laois County Council on behalf of the organisation.
“It’s very serious. It’s the most dangerous corner in Ireland,” Cllr McDonald told the council.
“It’s unfair to the drivers. It’s been going on for years and years.”
The motion was widely supported by fellow councillors, with Cllr Paddy Bracken pushing for traffic lights at the corner as he explained that when two trucks meet at the corner they have nowhere to go.
Laois County Council stated that the corner would be reviewed in line with Laois County Council’s traffic calming policy and any proposed works will be subject to budget availability.
The MD Senior Executive Engineer, Rory O’Callaghan, agreed that traffic lights would be the only solution for the issues at Sally’s Corner.
